Junk Art
Virtually any material can be used to create art. Children will be shown pictures of art made from trash, metal, and other unconventional items like mini plastic toys. Then be provided with large containers full of junk treasure items they can use to create their own piece of junk art. At the end of the activity, we have a mini art show and students show their pieces and explain why they used the items they did.
Nature Art plus Explore with Clay
Just as random, everyday objects can be used to create art, so can things from nature. We will explore this topic then the children will select an object or image they wish to create. After that, we take a short nature walk in the reserve. They may only collect nature items that are already on the ground to prevent any damage to living things. Examples of items they can collect include fallen leaves, gum nuts, pinecones, flowers, pieces of wood, seeds, moss, grass, and rocks.
Once back in the classroom, have students complete their pieces by gluing their nature items together onto a sheet of paper or using twine or wire to bind or construct the creature or object they are making. Discuss how turning to nature for art inspiration can lead to the creation of many unique pieces. They also have the opportunity to combine clay into nature art. How might this look, what do they notice about the clay? Do they have any challenges combining the mediums together? What can they create or recreate?
Fabric Dye - Nature is a Rainbow. Dyeing with plants and other natural materials can provide an intriguing lens for exploring the local environment, learning science concepts, conducting experiments, learning about history and other cultures, and creating compelling art. We will explore some materials first beforehand dying our own artwork. The first step in exploring the mystery of plant pigments is to transfer them directly to fabric, creating decorative patterns to adorn napkins, and pillowcases, or to make prints for framing. Have kids predict what colors their prints will be, explain their thinking, and then compare and discuss the results.
Sea Sculptures - Ocean Art
Several Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are now turning these destructive materials washed ashore like nets and other plastic materials into works of art, which are raising awareness for this terrible issue, and reflect the struggle that communities face in protecting the marine environment. We will explore ocean art before creating our own collaborative pieces using mostly recycled materials including netting, wire, bottle caps, and ropes to see what we can create.
Reflecting on our work we will then have a gallery walk around each student's finished pieces before we finish for the day.
